Chères et chers sociétaires,
En ce mois de mars 2018, nous avons appris la disparition de Mario Vegetti. Nous n’entreprendrons pas, dans le cadre de cette Newsletter, de dire l’ampleur de son apport aux études platoniciennes. Un récent volume, auquel notre Société est associée, propose de découvrir des morceaux choisis, traduits en langue anglaise, de la somme qu’il a dirigée autour de la République. Il ne fait pas de doute que nous verrons croître le cercle des lectrices et des lecteurs de Platon qui bénéficieront de l’intelligence et de l’érudition que Mario Vegetti a mis au service du texte des dialogues. Mais aujourd’hui, que l’on nous permette seulement de nous arrêter pour saluer l’homme, le collègue, l’ami, avec émotion.
Nous voudrions partager avec vous plusieurs informations sur les activités de notre société d’ici au XII Symposium Platonicum. Celui-ci aura lieu à Paris du 15 au 20 juillet 2019. Nos travaux se dérouleront chaque jour dans les bâtiments de l’INHA, situé au coeur de Paris, près des jardins du Palais Royal. L’appel à contributions pour participer au Symposium sera lancé fin juin 2018. Nous vous rappelons que seuls les projets des sociétaires à jour de leur cotisations seront transmis au comité exécutif pour évaluation, sans exception (les cotisations sont à régler strictement par voie électronique en suivant ce lien).
Notre société continue à étendre son action.
Ce mois-ci aura lieu le deuxième regional meeting de notre société en Asie, et le premier à Taiwan, grâce à la professeure Hua-kuei Ho. C’est un moment important pour les activités de notre société en Asie, huit ans après le Symposium de Tokyo en 2010 et quatre ans après le premier regional meeting, à Tokyo. En août, notre société sera présente à Pékin, au Congrès Mondial de Philosophie, avec un panel organisé par notre représentant pour l’Asie et l’Océanie, Yuji Kurihara.
En août aussi, le premier événement associé à notre société se déroulera en Russie, grâce à l’organisation du mid-term à St Petersbourg par Roman Svetlov : vous pouvez répondre à l’appel à contribution.
Enfin, la société est heureuse d’annoncer la seconde remise du prix “Conrado Eggers Lan” pour les thèses portant sur Platon et le platonisme, soutenues entre le 1 Janvier 2014 et le 31 juillet 2018. Les candidatures seront examinées par un jury nommé par le comité éditorial de l’IPS. Le lauréat ou la lauréate aura la possibilité de publier sa thèse dans une des collections de l’IPS. Les thèses doivent être écrites ou traduites dans l’une des cinq langues officielles de l’IPS (anglais, français, allemand, italien ou espagnol). Le texte complet doit être envoyé en format PDF à prize@platosociety.org avant le 1er août 2018, accompagné d’une lettre de recommandation de la directrice ou du directeur de thèse, ainsi qu’une copie du diplôme indiquant la date de la soutenance.
Nous vous écrivons cette Newsletter depuis le Plato Center de Dublin, où nous avons eu la joie, 11 ans après le Symposium Platonicum organisé par John Dillon, de participer à un atelier, organisé par Vasilis Politis, et consacré à la relation entre le Parménide et les autres dialogues (celles et ceux qui suivent notre société sur Facebook et Twitter ont pu suivre notre couverture de l’événement). Cet Atelier a été conçu en deux parties : la seconde se déroulera à Paris le 29 et 30 mai prochains, à Paris, en interrogeant la dimension cosmologique du Parménide. Nous espérons que ces manifestations, qui seront publiées début 2019, contribueront à enrichir les discussions que nous aurons lors du Symposium Platonicum.

Dear fellow members,
This March we learned that our dear colleague, Mario Vegetti, had passed away. This newsletter is not the place to attempt to describe the scope of his contribution to the field of Plato studies. A recent volume, with which our Society is associated, offers English translations of some selected pieces from volumes he edited on Plato’s Republic. We are confident that a growing number of readers of Plato will benefit from the intelligence and knowledge with which Mario Vegetti devoted himself to the task of reading the dialogues. But today, let us pause to commemorate the man, the colleague, and the friend, with emotion.
We would like to share some information on the activities of our society in the year to come, up to our XII Symposium Platonicum, which will take place in Paris July 15–20, 2019. We will meet every day on the premises of the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA), located in the very heart of Paris, near the garden of the Palais Royal. The call for papers will be launched by the end of June 2018. We remind you that only abstracts by paid up members will be transmitted to the Executive Committee for review; there will be no exceptions (membership fees are to be paid online).
Our society is expanding its activities.
This month, our second regional meeting in Asia will take place and, for the first time, in Taiwan, thanks to Professor Hua-kuei Ho. This is an important milestone for our society in Asia, eight years after our Symposium in Tokyo and four years after the first regional meeting in Tokyo. In August, our society will be present in Beijing, at the World Congress of Philosophy, with a panel organized by our representative for Asia and Oceania, Yuji Kurihara. Also in August, the first event officially associated with our society in Russia will take place, thanks to the organisation of our mid-term meeting in St Petersburg by Roman Sveltlov. The International Plato Society is glad to announce the second Conrado Eggers Lan Prize for outstanding dissertations in the field of Platonic studies. We invite submissions of dissertations that resulted in the award of the Ph.D. degree between January 1, 2014, and July 31, 2018. The submissions will be judged by a special committee appointed by the IPS Editorial Board. The prize-winning dissertation will be offered the opportunity of publication as a book in one of the leading IPS series. Nominated dissertations must be written in one of the five official languages of the IPS (English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish) or fully translated into one of them.The full text of the dissertation should be sent in PDF format to the email prize@platosociety.org by August 1, 2018, along with a letter from the dissertation supervisor or director, supporting the submission, and a certificate of graduation from the relevant degree-granting institution, indicating the date of the degree awarded.
We are writing to you from the Plato Centre in Dublin, where we are so happy, eleven years after the Symposium Platonicum organised by John Dillon, to participate with him in a workshop organised by Vasilis Politis, on the relation between the Parmenides and the other dialogues (those of you who follow the IPS on Facebook and Twitter may have followed our coverage). This workshop actually has two legs; the second will take place in Paris, May 29–30, and will be dedicated to the question whether there is a cosmological dimension to Plato’s Parmenides. We hope that these events, followed by a publication in early 2019, will contribute to the nourishment of our discussions at the Symposium Platonicum.
