After a successful Symposium in Madrid, the following team has assumed their functions in the Executive Committee

At the General Assembly held in Madrid, Elisabetta Cattanei was elected as the next President of the IPS. The Assembly accepted her proposal to make the Apology the theme of the next conference to be held in Milan (2031).

As you probably know, the XV Symposium Platonicum 2028 will take place in Lima (July 31 – August 4) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. The General Assembly held in Atlanta accepted my proposal to make the Protagoras and the Alcibiades I the subject of the conference. DEADLINE: All submissions must be received by: August. 30. 2027. Detailed Call for Papers will follow in due time.

Chloe Balla will organize the next Mid-Term Meeting in Creta. Here the announcement:

Plato on Law and Writing

Mid-term Symposium Platonicum, Neapoli, Lasithi (Crete), June 22–25, 2027

Plato’s relation with writing is intriguing and complex. He appears to be the first thinker to theorize the connection between writing on one hand and knowledge and human agency on the other. At the same time, he is the first author not only to experiment with sophisticated literary techniques but also to thematize the possibilities of the written text to produce and transmit knowledge, and its limits to convey meaning. The relationship between writing and law is thematized, too, in the dialogues—and perhaps connected with the rise of the “epigraphic habit” in Greece, as exemplified by early texts in Crete (Gortyn Law Code, Dreros Inscription).

Proposed sub-themes:

  • Writing and memory in Plato
  • The technology of writing
  • Plato’s Socrates on orality versus literacy
  • Written and unwritten law
  • Plato and the history/archaeology of law in Crete

Interested parties should submit an abstract of around 500 words (plus bibliography/works cited). Presentations will run for approximately 20 minutes with additional time for discussion/questions. Please submit abstracts to IPS.Crete.2027@fks.uoc.gr by October 10, 2026.

I am also happy to announce that Ikko Tanaka has accepted to organize an IPS Session at the World Congress of Philosophy 2028 in Tokyo (August 16-23). As you surely know, our former Presidente, Noburu Notomi, is a member of the Steering Committee of the FISP.

I have had first talks with Pedro Mesquita (Lisbon) as representative of the relative newly founded sister association, the International Aristoteles Society, in order to establish a closer relationship between our societies. The idea came up to consider the possibility of shared activities in our conferences. This will be discussed in due time in the Ex Comm.

Whereas Full Membership in the Society is reserved for scholars who have published at least one substantial article or have completed a dissertation on Plato or on the Platonic tradition, graduate students working towards a doctoral degree [or the equivalent] on Plato or on the Platonic tradition are eligible to become Associate Members.
