Hans Richarz, born 11 October 1924, Sankt Augustin, Germany, died in the same place, 7 April 2020. During the VII Symposium Platonicum at Würzburg from 26 to 31 July 2004, the General Assembly of the International Plato Society approved unanimously that Dr. Richarz be awarded the first Honorary Membership of the Society, which he accepted, remaining to date the only such recipient.

Hans Richarz was the founder of Academia Verlag. On the initiative of Livio Rossetti and Rafael Ferber, he agreed in 1990 to publish the Proceedings of the Symposia Platonica and other books on Plato in the newly founded series «International Plato Studies» in the Academia Verlag, St. Augustin, Germany, now an imprint of Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft, Baden-Baden. Since 1990, there have been 39 published volumes. Among them are the proceedings of the Symposia Platonica, as well as dissertations and the works of leading Plato scholars of different orientations. From the series devoted to Plato was born a rich pool of series, all concerning ancient philosophy. Together they made Academia Verlag world renowned.

Those who knew Hans Richarz personally will vividly recall his engagement, modesty and easy-going nature. He was a man of decent and true character.

Hans Richarz, geboren am 11. Oktober 1924 in St. Augustin, Deutschland, starb daselbst am 7. April 2020. Während des VII. Symposium Platonicum in Würzburg vom 26. bis zum 31. Juli 2004 ernannte die Generalversammlung der Internationalen Platon-Gesellschaft Herrn Dr. H. Richarz einstimmig zum ersten Ehrenmitglied der Gesellschaft. Er nahm die Ehre an und ist bis jetzt das einzige Ehrenmitglied geblieben.

H.Richarz ist der Gründer des Academia Verlages. Auf die Initiative von Livio Rossetti und Rafael Ferber hin entschloss er sich, die neu gegründete Reihe der Gesellschaft, die „International Plato Studies“, in seinen Verlag aufzunehmen. Seither sind dort 39 Bände erschienen. Darunter befinden sich die Akten der Symposia Platonica, Dissertationen und die Werke von führenden Platonforschern verschiedener Orientierung. Diese Platon gewidmete Reihe gab Anlass zu weiteren Reihen, welche die antike Philosophie betreffen. Zusammen machten sie den Academia Verlag weltweit bekannt.

Diejenigen, die H. Richarz persönlich gekannt haben, werden sein Engagement, seine Bescheidenheit und Umgänglichkeit in lebendiger Erinnerung behalten. H. Richarz war ein grundanständiger Verleger und Mensch.

Durante il settimo Symposium Platonicum a Würzburg (26-31 luglio 2004) l’assemblea generale della International Plato Society approvò all’unanimità il conferimento del titolo di Socio Onorario della società platonica al Dr. Richarz, che accettò, rimanendo fino ad oggi il solo beneficiario di questo riconoscimento.

Hans Richarz è stato il fondatore di Academia Verlag. Nel 1990, su proposta di Livio Rossetti e Rafael Ferber, egli convenne di pubblicare gli Atti dei Symposia Platonica e altri libri su Platone nella nuova collana «International Plato Studies» di Academia Verlag, St. Augustin, Germania, che ora è parte della Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft, Baden-Baden. Dal 1990, sono stati pubblicati, in questa collana, 39 volumi, tra i quali atti dei Symposia Platonica, dissertazioni e opere di eminenti platonisti di diverso orientamento. Dalla collana dedicata a Platone è derivato un intero grappolo di altre collane, tutte concernenti la filosofia antica. Congiuntamente, queste pubblicazioni hanno reso Academia Verlag conosciuta in tutto il mondo.
