- We kindly encourage you to post your full paper in English by April 25 (or at least your main hypotheses and arguments).
Upload it to https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HxsEvTdh1iGQm97QbvbDKTHagkyToryt?usp=sharing indicating your surname in the filename or send it to symposiumplatonicum14@gmail.com so that everyone can follow your presentation in the language of your choice.
- Please bring your own computer so that you can be autonomous and follow all presentations on your own. Please remember that this is an ‘in person’ Symposium. (We would like to return to the happy old days when people used to enjoy talking at the lunch table, in corridors, on buses, while strolling, or at Banquets: face to face, observing eye contact reactions, passionately exchanging views, and erotically seeking answers).
- New: Cornelia de Vogel Prize: Call for the 5 best papers written by authors under 40 years of age whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the XIV Symposium by the Executive Committee. We estimate 800€ for each winner as support for travel expenses. Deadline for submitting your paper: 15 April, 3500 words maximum. See here the Call for Papers.
- Hotel Reservations: Time flies. Madrid is getting more and more expensive, especially in spring, when a lot of events are organised in the city. So, please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange special IPS rates at hotels, for the incredible reason that, after contacting many of them, they simply refuse to keep prices or reservations for us, even when there are about 120-130 Members of the IPS coming. The paradoxical result is that you can get better deals on the platforms online than after long fruitless phone conversations with the hotels.
Please note the distance from hotels to the Campus. The metro station (Ciudad Universitaria) connects the Campus with the city centre. Walking distance from the metro station to our faculty: 1 km. (Hopefully it won’t rain). Alternatively, take a taxi. (If you share it with other IPS members, it may be quite unexpensive).
Social Programme
Please have a look at the Social Programme (all lunches, coffee breaks and Cocktail Receptions are included in the registration fee of 150€).
- a) Monday: Welcome Cocktail Reception in the evening at the Círculo de Bellas Artes(Nice views of the city: downtown)
- b) Tuesday: Evening Cocktail at the Greek Ambassador’s Residence(Nice gardens near the Campus)
- c) Wednesday: Free afternoon:Unfortunately, we had to give up organising a large excursion of 120-130 Members, for two basic reasons: prices are much higher, and facilities are much more difficult to manage. But Madrid has a wonderful offer to enjoy:
The Prado Museum: Velázquez, Goya, el Greco, Tiziano, el Bosco, Rubens, among many others.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Impressionism and Expressionism: Monet, Gauguin, Degas, van Gogh, Kirchner, Mondrian, Hopper, among others.
The Reina Sofía Museum: Picasso’s masterpiece ‘Guernica’, Dalí, Miró, Saura, Braque, among other abstract collections.
The Archeological Museum: huge collection of art pieces from different cultures throughout the history of the Iberian Peninsula (do not miss the Greek vases).
The National Library: valuable collection of incunables, manuscripts, prints, drawings, photographs, maps…Or just relax and stroll through the Parque del Retiro. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Palacio de Cristal and the pond.
Alternatively, if you want to take the chance to see Toledo, Segovia, or El Escorial, please have a look at this info:
TOLEDO
(Always crowded)
Wonderful views of the mediaeval city from the ‘Parador’.
The best way to visit Toledo is to take a train from Atocha (Madrid Puerta de Atocha Almudena Grandes Station: fast train: AVE: 33 min; AVANT train: 38 MIN: prices vary a lot depending on times and type of train, but it must cost about 25-30€ return).
What to see: Plaza de Zocodover, Alcázar, Mosque ‘Cristo de la Luz’, Iglesia de Santo Tomé (El entierro del Conde Orgaz by el Greco), Casa Museo del Greco, Jewish Quarter, Mirador de San Cristobal and Cathedral. If you have the chance, take a taxi to the ‘Parador’ Nacional de Toledo (Cerro del Emperador sin número) and enjoy the wonderful views of the city and river Tajo from the other side, while having a drink or dinner.
Warning: Toledo is always crowded, hopefully less so on a Wed.
Strongly Recommended: If you want a guided tour in English, please book it online in advance.
SEGOVIA
(Likely to be less crowded)
From Chamartín Station, take a fast train (AVE) to Segovia (20 min; tickets about 30€ return).
What to see: Roman Aqueduct, Cathedral, Casa Museo de Antonio Machado (On Wed free admission; please check timetables) and at the end of the town you can visit the Alcázar (It is worth seeing; General Admission: 9€; Discounts for over 65 and students under 25: 7€).
You can book an English-speaking guided tour online or just stroll by your own.
EL ESCORIAL
(Likely to be less crowded)
Take Bus 664 or 661 from Moncloa Station. It takes 55 min. Price about: 8€ return.
What to see:
Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo; (General Admission: 14€, Discounts for over 65 and students under 25: 7€). It includes Basilica, Pantheon of the Kings, Austrias Palace and Royal Library.
Nota Bene: The Royal Library hosts two Platonic Manuscripts: Escur. Ψ I 1 made in Corfu by Demetrios Triboles in 1461-2 (including the Theaetetus) and Escur. y I 13. Both belonged to the Vatican Library till the sack of Rome in 1527, now guarded by the Augustinians Priests. For a wonderful (detective) history of both manuscripts: see here.
- d) Thursday Evening: Closing Dinner:Gardens of the Museo del Traje,(in Campus) served by the famous ‘Café de Oriente’: Ticket Prize: 55€.
- e) Friday Evening: Farewell Receptionat the Faculty of Philosophy.
