International Plato Society, Newsletter, Issue 4 (2010-2)
Tokyo, February 2010
Dear Colleagues,
We are happy to tell you that the preparation for the IX Symposium Platonicum (to be held in Tokyo on 2-7 August) is going well. This newsletter offers information about the program and registration of the Tokyo Symposium. We are aware that some IPS members will unfortunately be unable to make a long trip to Tokyo this summer, but we will try our best to share our academic results with all the members and thereby to advance Platonic studies. We are looking forward to discussing the “Politeia” with many participants in our triennial meeting in Tokyo.

(1) Program of the Symposium
The submission of abstracts was closed in October 2009, and the Executive Committee read the abstracts and carefully discussed the program. The assessment results were sent in late January to all the members who had submitted abstracts. If someone who submitted an abstract has not received any notification yet, please contact the TOC soon (there may have been some e-mail problem). We thank all the applicants, but since we have received far more proposals than we could include in the program, we regrettably have had to decline many papers.
For the Symposium, we plan to have 3 invited lectures, 8 plenary papers, 2 panel sessions (6 speakers with 2 commentators), and 7 parallel sessions (3 or 4 rooms for each). This time we are introducing a new scheme of panels: on the two main topics of the dialogue, namely “polis” and “psyche”.
The Welcoming Reception will be held after the De Vogel lecture on the Monday evening; a Cultural Event is planned on Tuesday; the Farewell Party is on Friday.
The final program will be posted on the Symposium website in early July, and all the relevant information and notices can be read there, so please keep watch on our Symposium website:

(2) Registration
Registration for the Symposium started at the beginning of February. You can make an “Online Registration” in the Symposium website. Those who are not accustomed to using a website or to making payment by credit card are kindly requested to send a “registration form” (attached to this Newsletter) to the TOC.
The registration fee for a regular participant is 20,000 Japanese yen. There are special arrangements for members based in Latin America or Africa (6,000 yen), and for students (6,000 yen). Accompanying persons are free. Registration can be made from February to 30 April. Those who register late, after 1 May, must pay 25,000 yen (regular) or 10,000 yen (LA, African, or student).
The registration fee includes “Conference Proceedings” (available on site), subscription to the “Selected Papers” (to be published from Academia Verlag in 2013), Reception, Farewell Party, and Culture Events. “Selected Papers” will be sent in a few years to the participants in the Symposium. Please remember that if you buy a volume, it will cost ca. 50 euro!
For Tokyo City Excursion and Banquet (both planned on 4 August), one needs separate booking (see below).
(3) Abstracts and Proceedings
We will post the abstracts of the papers to be delivered at the Symposium on the website from April. These abstracts can be read by anyone who is interested in the conference.
The TOC will produce the “Proceedings” volume, which includes full papers (or summaries if the authors prefer) of the Symposium and will be available on site. Those whose papers are accepted are requested to submit their full papers by 15 May (for details, see the website “Paper Submission”). IPS members who are unable to attend the conference can buy the Proceedings later (print or digital).
Please note that the “Selected Papers” will be published separately from Academia Verlag later in 2013, with our usual editorial selection.
(4) Accommodation, Excursion, and Banquet
We are sorry that the currency exchange rate has recently been favouring the Japanese yen against US dollar, Euro, Sterling, and some other currencies. The Japanese economy is in the middle of depression, but nevertheless traveling in Japan might appear to foreigners to be a little expensive. We just keep our fingers crossed for a better economic situation.
We will provide information about hotels, eating, and cultural events on the Symposium website. You can reserve a room in a major hotel near the venue, in the “Online Registration” or by contacting the travel agency:
Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd. (KNT)
Global Business Management Branch
Tokyo Kintetsu Bldg. 6F, 19-2 Kanda-Matsunaga-cho, Chiyoda-ku

Fax: +81-3-5256-1588 Tel: +81-3-5256-1581
E-mail: ips2010-gbm@or.knt.co.jp
Some more hotels of reasonable price are also listed on the website, so that you can book by yourself.
Two courses of excursion in the city, namely “Traditional Tokyo” and “Contemporary Tokyo”, are planned on the afternoon of 4 August (3,000 yen per person), followed by the Banquet at the Tokyo Prince Hotel (6,000 yen per person). For both or either of them, please book in advance, via the “Online Registration” or by sending us a registration form.
(5) General Assembly
The General Assembly will be held on the late afternoon of 5 August, Thursday. As we announced in the last Newsletter, the election of regional representatives will be held there, and nominations, signed by at least two members in good standing, may be sent to the TOC by the end of June 2010.
Proposals are also invited for a venue for the meeting of 2016, after the X Symposium Platonicum in Pisa in 2013. Statements of willingness to host such a meeting should be submitted to the TOC with the details of the venue proposed and the expected degree of support, by the end of March 2010.
The proposals will be posted on the TOC website (“General Assembly”) in advance, and the venue will be decided, in accordance with the Statutes, by a vote of the members present at the General Assembly.
